I like this quote...

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours -- it is an amazing journey -- and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins."
-- Bob Moawad,

I got that in one of my emails today.  It speaks to me.
Going to bed, I'll be doing either sewing or cooking tonight, so check back.

Patience, my young grasshopper....all shall come in time..soon...

Sorry I haven't written lately.  Been working.  My next nights off are tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday, so I'll try to do some cooking, sewing, or gaming, and blog a bit about whichever I do.
Unfortunately, I do have to work tonight because of a strange situation, so I have to go to bed.

More soon.

I didn't forget.

I've been working, I haven't forgotten about this.  I got vto tonight, going to the Renaissance fair tomorrow, but I will probably be doing some hobby on my nights off, I'll blog more then.

Here's for now, though.  My nerve wracking adventure today was that I was almost hit by a car that was backing up.  I was walking through the parking lot, on a pedestrian crossing, into work.  It was about a half hour before the start of my shift, and right around the time that the previous shift was ending, so there were a lot of people leaving.  The parking lot right in front of the building can get a little backed up with people, and it was like that tonight.  There was a line of cars to the exit.  The one that almost backed into me was parked slightly on the crosswalk, so I went to go around behind him.  I don't know if he tried to go over the speed bumps and failed, or if he was just backing up, but he backed up about five feet, pretty quickly, and if I hadn't hurriedly done a few side/back steps, he would have hit me.  I hurried the rest of the way across.  There was a guy sitting in one of the cars parked neaby who saw, I don't know if he was just getting off, or waiting to start, but when he saw he said to me as I passed, "man, I would have kicked his car! You should kick his car!"
I kind of ducked my head, muttered "I'm not that kind of person" and hurried the rest of the way in.
It's an interesting thing to see happen, though.  I always look before I cross, this guy was at a complete stop, with his break light on, when I started walking.  I have to wonder what line of events caused him to back up.  The guy in front of him was also at a complete stand still, and he was in the middle of a full parking lot.  There was literally no where to go.  There were cars in front of him, cars behind him, and cars parked on both sides.
Food for thought.
Maybe he just didn't like how I was walking.

Anywho, I've got to break my usual schedule and go to bed.  Getting up at a normal hour tomorrow to go to the Renaissance fair.

Nighttime adventures in baking

I made cookies!  Huzzah!  Here's the recipe.

I have no idea when or where we got this recipe, or if the story is true, but we've had it for my entire extended life of 20 years.

It's really, really easy to follow, and plays in with my not loving to meticulously measure things.  You can put a little more or less of pretty much any of these ingredients and they'll still turn out delicious.

So, for the sake of having a few more words, I'll describe the process.

I usually half the recipe.  Cause I don't know about you, but I do not need 112 cookies.
That is far too much temptation, right there.
Maybe if you're having a party, or giving the away as gifts.

Start out by getting two large mixing bowls.  One for dry ingredients, one for wet.

Grab your oatmeal and blend it up to really small, basically powderifying it.  It calls for 5 cups, so I make 3 1/2.
It has to be 3 1/2 of blended oatmeal, not just normal oatmeal.  That's important.

Once that's blended and the correct amount is in your dry mixing bowl, put in the rest of the dry ingredients.
Halfing it, so 2 cups of flour, half a tsp of salt, and one tsp each of baking powder and baking soda.
Have all those?  great.  Now grab a spoon and roughly stir those together.  And no, I do not mean be really rough (as in violent), I mean you don't have to stir so perfectly that every single thing is mixed to amazing perfection..  Not a huge deal if it gets perfectly mixed, you just want them mostly mixed.

Now on to the wet ingredients bowl.  Toss in your butter, Halfing would be 1 cup, which is usually two sticks of butter.  16 oz.
I suppose if you're trying to be healthy you could sort of skimp on that, but if you're trying to be healthy, why are you making cookies?
Halfing it, add one cup each of brown and normal white sugar.  Grab your mixer, and start mixing!
Got that pretty well mixed?

What's half of 2 tsp's vanilla extract?  1 tsp?  Good job!  Add that.
And grab two chicken babies to put in, too.  Again, if you want to be healthier you could take out the yolks, but this is seriously not a healthy recipe, so why are you here?

Got that all mixed up?  Now slowly add some dry mix into your wet mix, half a cup at a time is easiest, if you put more than that it tends to puff up in your face and you're breathing flour/oatmeal/baking soda/powder/salt air.  Less pleasant than normal air, so I'd avoid that.  Small amounts at a time.
Now just mix all that up until you've combined both of them.

Once it's all mixed, toss in your chocolate chips and ground up Hershey bar.  I don't usually add nuts, but that's up to you, you nutty people.
Preheat your oven, that helps speed things up a bit.  It's easiest to have two cookie sheets, that way you can be rolling cookie balls while the others are cooking.  It says 6 minutes, and that is usually what I start at, but in order to get that slightly crunchy crust and soft gooey inside, I usually have to cook it for 2-4 more minutes.  Depends on how you like your cookies, though.  You could do more, you could do less.

Now take'em out, let'em cool, put'em away, and eat'em!  Not all at the same time, though.  That might be unhealthy.
This is one out of four plates of cookies, all equally as full.  I didn't count, but even halfing the recipe, you end up with a lot of cookies.

Congratulations!  You now have cookies!  Share them with your friends, for they are amazing and delicious, and your friends will love you forever.
Or at least, until you run out of cookies.  Then you're no your own.

Adventures with portals

So, I finally convinced my boyfriend to play portal, and it's killing me not to help.  The only thing I try to allow myself to say is "you're not thinking with portals".
It's really fun watching the things he thinks of.  I've been playing portal so long that I just look around and think "oh, I could put a portal there and there, and do a long fall jump to get there" and so forth and so on.  It's fun to see the way his mind works.

Cooking adventures

So, in my cooking adventures tonight, I made Orange chicken!  Sort of.

Ingredients
Three skinless, boneless chicken breasts
Probably three or four oranges worth of freshly squeezed orange juice
A dash of powdered ginger
A glop of honey
Some oil
A sprinkle of flour
A little bit of soy sauce

So I started by thawing the chicken, cause it was really, really solid.  Took like, fifteen minutes.
Then my boyfriend and I cut it up all neat and nice.
He's very particular about food.
He cut off all the "bad" parts, fat, whiteish parts, reddish parts, all that jazz, off of all three breasts, and it ended up being about the equivalent of one small chicken breast.
Anywho, cut it into bite sized pieces, toss it in a pan with the oil, to make sure the chicken doesn't stick or anything, and cook that with much stirring until the chicken is all cooked.
Then put your glop of honey, your soy sauce, your orange juice, your dash of powdered ginger, and your sprinkle of flour into a bowl and mix it up.  Now add dashes and globs of all these ingredients until it's the saucy consistency you want, and the flavor you want, and mix it all in with your chicken.

Congratulations!  You now have sort-of orange chicken!  Is it delicious?  Good job.  Mine turned out pretty well, but I think I'm going to make it again on another night off and do some experimenting.
Lemme know how it turns out if you try it!

Just warning, this is very much my style of cooking.
I don't usually do a ton of measuring, so when I write things down they're going to be in estimated amounts, not actual measurements.
Have fun deciphering!

Maybe cookies tomorrow night?  Or I guess tonight...being on nights is confusing sometimes.
Anywho, goodnight for now!

Interesting developments

Good morning my lovelies.
So, a very interesting thing happened today.
I work for a company, but am actually employed with a staffing company.
I worked with them seasonal last year, and was rehired a few weeks ago.
Now, I got an email from the company, to schedule a time to convert from working for the staffing company, to actually working for the company.

My problem is, I don't really like the job.  Yesterday I decided I'd start looking for work elsewhere, and today I get this email and schedule the appointment.
I mean, I didn't even think I was doing well enough for them to consider converting me.
I guess I am, though...
It's not like it's a contract job, so I can still look for a different job, but this is a pretty good first non-seasonal job.  They have good benefits, it's not minimum wage..
I suppose I'll just live with it unless I find something that's actually better.

Well, thanks for listening.  That's it for right now.  Gonna do some cooking tonight, so I'll post again later.

Introductions again? A look back on the past...

I'm home from orchestra, so here's that re-introduction I promised.
Now, again, keeping with the fact that I don't really love the idea of giving hugely personal information, I'm not going to go to detailed.

I'm an avid hobbyist, with everything ranging from drawing, to chainmaille, to writing calligraphy, with crochetting, carving, sewing, paper craft, and many, many more thrown in between.  I'm sure I'll get to those later.  I'd rather like to try candle making.  And rapier fighting.  Ah, I also do leather crafting.
In my family I have my father, mother, older sister, and younger brother.  So I am the wild middle child, and that will probably come through in my writing whenever I complain about any of them.  Which I probably will do.
Also included in my family that I will probably talk about are our animals.  We have two cats, A female, short haired orange lioness (she likes to sit on our shoulders.  And chase crinkled paper balls.  Best cat ever.) named Artemis, and a male, long haired fuzzy orange puffball (he is the very definition of a scaredy cat.  I swear, if you breath in his general direction, he disappears to the safe upstairs land.) named Cicero.
Yes, Cicero was named after the mad jester in Skyrim, in case you were wondering.  My dad thought it was splendid, we wanted to name him after a Greek (or was it Roman?) scholar.  I let him keep thinking that.  *cough* mad jester *cough*
My hobbies are what I'll write about.
Hobbies and experiments.  I'll post all the strange new things I'm trying out to try to get my hair to grow faster.
I'll put recipes for food I make, though I'm not a very good cook.  Working on leveling that particular skill up.
Projects I'm working on, or want to work on.  Things I'm thinking about that I'm comfortable sharing.
And on and on and on.  I'm sure I'm not covering everything I hope to write about, but that's fine.
I'll just cover those things when they come up.

I'm currently working night shift, so I'll be posting at night most of the time.  Especially on my nights off.
Gotta do something to kill those hours until I can go to bed.

It is time for me to go to bed now, though.  So I will bid you goodnight, Internet.  It was lovely chatting with you.

Auditions? Fun?

Turns out it's actually really fun doing the behind the scenes orchestration of auditions.  Previously I've always been the one being auditioned.
I know the anxiety and nervousness of being auditioned.  My sister and I were in charge of getting the kids from the orchestra to the auditioners.
So now all I have to do to be a week rounded orchestra goer is try my hand at auditioning people.

Or not.

I'm back again!

I got the blog app on my phone, so hopefully I'll remember to write more.
I've always wanted to have a blog.
Just gotta get around to writing.
So, I'll do some re-introductions once I have more time, but currently I am at orchestra, assisting with the auditions of the symphonette orchestra.

Job hunting sucks.

So you know those goals we set for ourselves?  Mine was "I'll have a job and move out by 18".
Boy did that one fail.
So then, my next one was "I'll have a job and be moved out by 20"
That one is pretty much a fail.  I'm going to turn 20 next month, and no job.
I started job searching before I turned 18, and almost two years later I haven't gotten a single call back.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if I just have awful luck.

Primarily I've been putting applications in online, because whenever I go places and ask for applications, they always say they do online applications.
Maybe that's just a polite rejection..?
I'd love to get into bartending.  My aunt was a bartender at my age, she said it was a great experience and decent money for the hours.
I was thinking about taking a bartending class, but the only places that had classes were like an hour away from me, and while I do have a license, I do not have insurance or a car.  So I'd have to figure out the bus system, and it'd take like two and a half hours to get there, then however long the class is, there were a few that were a couple hours, a few that were basically all day, and then I'd have to get home.  If I took the all day classes, would the buses even be running still?
So, I didn't actually do that, as you can see, there were some issues.

I ended up buying an online course thing, learn at your own pace kind of thing.
The problem with that is that I have to practice on my own, and I'm very bad at that.

The next job I'd like, if I can't get bartending, is waitressing or being a barback.  Tips, and the possibility of being able to move up to bartending at some point is very appealing to me.

But at this point, two years of job searching, I'm very discouraged.  I'm literally putting in applications everywhere nearby.
It has to be nearby, because I don't have a car.

I actually sort of had a possible bartending job lined up...I became friends with a guy on an online dating site who was opening his own bar.
It was in the same vicinity as the bartending schools, though.  Like, an hour away by car.  I kind of feel bad that I let that opportunity slip by.

Sigh.  Well, there's not really any point in dwelling.
He's holding interviews tomorrow, and I haven't practiced enough bartending to be comfortable trying.
Not that I could get there, anyway.
That ship has sailed.

I think I'll start working harder on the lessons I got from the online bartending course.
It has two quizzes and a test that you can take once you're comfortable, and then they supposedly help you get a job bartending.
As far as I know it's just that they find local bartending opportunities and tell you about them.  Not a guaranteed job or anything.

Anyway, enough rambling.
I'll write more later.

Hair experiments

So, I donated my hair at the beginning of the year, and have since been trying to grow it back as fast as possible.
My hair used to be down below my butt, and it's now just barely touching my shoulders.
I love having long hair, I really do.

My sister thinks it's a hassle.
It makes showers take longer, it gets everywhere when you sleep, just generally troublesome.
I don't mind.
I get to take longer showers, what could be bad about that?
I braid it at night, so it doesn't get in the way, and I get nice waves when I take the braid out in the morning.

My mom and my sister donate basically as often as they can.
As soon as their hair is long enough to donate, they do.
Normally, I don't.
But they had been pressuring me to do it for a really, really long time, and it was starting to get to me.
Big mistake.
I have come to the decision that I am not cutting my hair like that ever again.
Trims are fine, but I love my long hair, and right now, I don't have it.

So because of this, I've been looking for all sorts of different ways to grow it out again.
I take biotin every night because it's supposed to promote healthy hair, nails, and skin.
I use coconut oil to deep moisturizer my hair about once a week.
I learned that the chemicals in shampoo strip the natural oils that help have healthy growth, so I'm trying to find alternatives to shampoo.

For a little while I tried baking soda.
You're supposed to do baking soda to wash, and apple cider vinegar to condition.
The acidity and stuff balances out if you do both, but I read that apple cider vinegar can fade dyed hair, and I use henna, so I didn't want to do that.
I learned shortly after that baking soda can also fade dyed color, so I quit doing that and moved on to trying castile soap.

Now, I like castile soap.  My family uses it whenever we go camping down the Grand Canyon, so we have it on hand.
It's not the best for washing hair, though.  We have concentrated castile soap, so in order to use it, I have to thin it out with water, and it just never feels like my hair likes it.  My hair is always kind of strange feeling after.  Not quite dry, not quite oily, just..strange.

So what I'm going to try next is something I read on a random person's blog.  They do a lot of this kind of natural beauty stuff.
I'll try to remember to put the link.

http://www.healthyvegasvegan.com/2014/02/01/simple-diy-herbal-hair-cleanser-conditioner/

Anyway, what she says she does is mix equal parts yucca root powder, fenugreek powder, and amla berry powder, with hot water, and just lather that on.  I think I'm going to add a few drops of rosemary oil to the mixture, cause it's supposed to promote hair growth.
Maybe a little bit of coconut oil, too, depending on how it turns out the first couple times.
I'm trying to find some local herb shops to find those, but if I can't, I'm going to order them online.  I'll let you know how it goes.

I also read about the inversion method.

http://hairdiary.wordpress.com/2013/08/31/the-inversion-method-for-hair-grow-an-inch-of-hair-in-7-days/

You massage your scalp, with or without oil, to get better circulation, then put yourself upside down for 4 minutes, and you do this for one week straight, once a month.  Supposedly if you do it any more than that, your body will become accustomed to it, and it will no longer have any effect.
Apparently you can get up to an inch of growth in that week of doing the inversion method, and you can do it once a month.
That's 12 possible inches of growth, if you do it religiously.  An entire foot of hair.  I'm hopeful.
I put it in my calendar so I'll remember to do it every month.

I'm also looking into some different methods of curling or straightening hair without heat.
I'll do a separate post about that.

Been lovely chatting with you~

Pillows are glorious!

So, after the run today we stopped by costco, cause it was on the way home and we needed some things.
Got a few awesome things like sparkling cider, my favorite fancy beverage, coconut water (which I use in smoothies.  I'm an avid smoothiest.), and most importantly, I got a new pillow!!!

Now, for that to make any sense, I need to explain a few things.
I call the way I make my and sleep in my bed, nesting.  I call it that because I have tons of pillows and blankets.
My bed frame is the upper part of a bunk bed, so it has bars around the edges.  This makes it very good for piling pillows around the edges to give the bed a nice nesty shape.
The reason I nest is because when I was very young, like, 5-6 years old, I witnessed part of a zombie movie, and was thus traumatized forever.
My young, traumatized mind came to the rock solid conclusion that the only way to be safe from zombies at night was to always be covered by something.  Blanket, sheet, pillows, whatever.  I'm not entirely sure why I thought that, but I did.
So I developed the habit of always sleeping with something over me.
Always.
And I still do it.
I feel very, very uncomfortable if I sleep any other way.

Got a little off topic there, forgive my rambling.
So, my nest is made up of three fuzzy blankets, two big comforters, a sheet, and eight pillows.
Lots.  Some might call it excessive.  They would be crazy.  It's an awesome nest.
Anywho, all of the pillows are hand-me-down's from my parents.
Whenever their pillows got flat or unfluffy, they'd go to throw them away, and I would very valiantly rescue them.
With permission, of course.  I wouldn't take them from the trash or anything.
So I had a lot of pillows, but I didn't have any good pillows.

Back to the original topic, my new pillow!!!
Yay!
It's so gloriously comfortable.
I'm going to sleep so well tonight.  Hopefully.

Anywho, done for now.  I'm at my grandparent's, so I should go be social.
Hah.  I think I'll just give in to my exhaustion instead, and try to take a nap on the couch.

Ciao,

Guys, I'm a silver metalist!!

So, today I did a 5k race with my family, it was the last of the Arizona road racers summer series, and I got 2nd place for my age group, silver metal.
Now, that sounds pretty impressive, right?
Not really.  I was second out of three girls in my age group.  My sister was third place.
Not so impressive anymore, right?
Yeah, my time was like, 37:59, I think.  Not the best I've ever done, but not the worst either.
That's the first time I've ever won any sort of metal.  Kinda nice, despite the fact that it's not really much of an accomplishment.

Anywho, changing subjects.  I've actually got a few things going on now that I think it'd be fun to blog about, so I'm going to try (read: try.) to write more.  I'd also like to make a few videos, but I kinda suck at doing the editing, so I may just laze out of doing that.
No spoilers.  Heheh,
Mer.  Well.  It's been nice, but I'm going to go find a nice cozy corner to curl in and die.  I hate running.
Bye~

Being tired isn't so bad, when you're not tired anymore..

I frequently stay up far too late, and then get up at a (at least semi) normal hour in the morning.  In my experience, that is not conducive to being fully awake and not tired all the time.  But I still do it.  Why?
One of the reasons is because when I'm tired like that, at some point you get to the point where you're so tired that you're no longer tired.
The point where, if you sit or lie down for even a short moment, it starts getting to you, but as long as you're going..you're not tired.
That's a favorite reason of mine.  Though, not a reasonable one.
Another reason is because it's almost like being drunk.  Not that I really have any experience with that yet, but it's kind of what I imagine as being drunk.
Lowered inhibitions, laugh at everything, trouble speaking sometimes, unbalanced.  To me, that sounds drunk.
But with me, it's just being tired.
Anyone else experience that?

Thanks for listening.

Out of body experience...while dish washing?

I just had the weirdest experience.

I was loading the dishwasher, and I sort of crouched to put silver wear in, and when I stood up it was like..
I dunno, almost like one of those dizzy spell headrush things, except my body was still moving to do dishes.
But it was like I couldn't really feel anything, cause at one point my arm touched the faucet, which was running really hot water, and I didn't feel it at all.
It was like some sort of out of body experience.  Really, really bizarre feeling.
It was as if I was no longer controlling my body.  It was just on autopilot, and I'd taken a step back to watch.

Might have something to do with me staying up till almost 6...but eh, probably not.
Also, my apologies for not writing more.
...Though I'm not entirely sure who I'm apologizing to..
Myself, maybe?

I'm sorry, self, that I haven't been writing more.

*sniffle* It's fine, I always knew you didn't love this part of yourself anyway.

Aww, c'mon, self, don't be like that.  I'm writing now, aren't I?

*whipes eyes* I suppose.  It would feel better if you'd actually write more often though...

Eh, what can I say?  Without anyone reading, there's no one to please, so not really much of a point in doing it.

*sobbing* I can tell when I'm not wanted!!

What?! No, come back!

*door slams*

...

Late night entries...or would that be early morning?

Well, here I am, blogging at 3:30 am.  Aren't you so proud of how much better I'm doing with this whole staying up late thing?
I mean, at least it's not 5:00, like last time...
All joking aside, I have been rather delinquent about getting all the things I need to do done.
I have to decorate the house, inside and out..along with the tree.  That's not decorated yet either..
Then along with that we have to clean the house, because relatives are coming over in a few days.
And then, on top of that, I'm supposed to be sewing Christmas presents for my family and friends.
And, if that's not enough, I'm also supposed to make a video for my vlog.

Of course, that last one is just one of the things I want to do, rather than one of the things I need to do...
Meh.  I'm going to bed...tomorrow is going to be a long day of decorating..and cleaning...and sewing..and probably not any video making..
Honestly, I'd be surprised if I even got past decorating...

Life doesn't want me to vlog.

I was supposed to make a video today, but I just couldn't.
I woke up at like 4:30, about two hours before my alarm.
Then hung out in bed trying in vain to sleep a bit more before my alarm would go off.
Then I went to sew, which lasted until 1:00, which was when my sister came to pick me up.
Then we went home, and I had to do dishes because my best friend was coming over to pick me up so we could go hang out.
And here I am, at 6:45, not going to be home until late, and still no video.
I am determined though.  December is extremely busy, but on the next semi free day, I will attempt to make a video.

Sorry it's taking so long..

Lessons, lessons, lessons.

Tuesdays are always extremely busy. We get up, Jared is supposed to practice, but he rarely does.  Then we rush lunch and head off to cello lessons.
I rarely practice, so I regularly incur the wrath of my teacher.  Of course, it's not really wrath, but she would be happier if I practiced.
I honestly don't feel very bad about not practicing.  I still do well enough in my lessons, and it's not like I'm really working up towards anything in the musical world.  My position in both of my orchestras are pretty concrete.  I won't have to audition again any time soon.
Jared, though..Jared needs the practice.
I'm not really sure why I'm bothering to write this down..

So, I know I was supposed to make a video yesterday, but Mondays are also very busy.  Latin, orchestra...it's rather tragic.
I will endeavor to record a video today after I get back from lessons.  Then I'll have the rest of the week to edit it.
I'll try to work with just one editing app, then the next video I'll try a different one, till I've figured out which works best, and if I can work with my iPad.  Even if I discover that it won't work, I'll still make the videos on my iPad this time.  I like to try to stick to the "I'll try anything three times before saying I don't like it" thing.

On a side note, still concerning my iPad, the case is out for delivery!  It was delayed because of weather, so instead of getting it on Friday like I was hoping for (and paid for faster shipping for), I'll hopefully be getting it on Tuesday.   I'm extremely looking forward to getting this case.
It's supposed to be real cow leather, none of that sissy vegan leather for me.  I'm a real man.  ðŸ˜œ
I personally love the smell and feel of leather.
So, the case should be much like the case I had for my iPad 2, though, I don't know if the case that's coming has a place for a stylus.
One thing I really like about it though is that the company that makes them is extremely good with customer service.
When someone left a review with a suggestion about a way they could improve the case, they actually took it and improved it in all of their products, then sent the new and improved case to the person who left the review.

Well, it's my turn for a lesson.

Sleeping is nice..except when it isn't..

Do you ever have those nights where you just have a terrible time of sleeping?
I mean, I'm a pretty decent sleeper.  Typically my problem is that I just go to bed really late.
But occasionally I have those nights where I very irritatingly wake up every hour on the hour.
It's extremely annoying.  I don't feel rested at all, and I slept until 12.  It's terrible.
And as far as I can tell, it's not because of any weird dreams or anything, cause typically I remember my dreams.
It's just that every hour, on the hour, it's as if an alarm goes off in my head saying

"you're going to be late! Get up! Get up! Get up!"

It's the kind of waking up where you bolt upright and are halfway out of bed before you realize what time it is.
Then it's cold, because you're no longer in your nest of blankets, and it takes a long time to get back to sleep because of the abruptness of the wake up.

Well..that's my little post for this morning.  I may write later, but no guarantee.
